A Large Carved Wood Quan Yin Temple Statue China 19th Century Carved in the round the serene robed figure stands on an integral carved wood lotus base polychrome painted over a gesso layer she holds a blooming lotus in one hand. Most probably made for use outside a temple. The goddess of mercy or "she who hears prayers" is a much loved goddess embodying beauty and salvation from misery and is widely worshiped appearing in many manifestations throughout Asia and considered to have great influence over the forces of nature. In Sanskrit this manifestation is referred to as "Padmapani" or "holder of the lotus." The legend describes a pious person who through piety and deed was elevated to buddhahood but chose to remain on earth to help. This example was brought from China in the mid-20th Century though the age of it is.
