Aug. 4, 1850, describing his journey from the St. Joseph area. "The amount of suffering on the road will be very great all of the emigrants started from the states with light loads of provisions and expecting to make short trips but all are doomed to disappointment, and as men on the plains eat twice as much as they do at home they are sure to get out of food. I have seen men offer one dollar for a hard biscuit, two dollars for three pints of water." Also included is Hicks' leather "bullet bag" mentioned in his diary on March 17, 1850 ("Horton presented me a Bible, Bullet bag"). In addition is a pair of Spanish or Mexican brass spurs with figural decoration, that Hicks wore when he went west for the Gold Rush (1-7/8" rowels, 6" L x 3" W x 2-3/8" D, circa 1840), and a family archival photo (8 1/4" x 10") of the same spurs together with his pistols (pistols not included). JOHN AND JAMES BARD (NEW YORK,
JOHN AND JAMES BARD (NEW YORK, 1815-1897), PORTRAIT OF THE GOLD RUSH STEAMER WILSON G. HUNT., OIL ON CANVAS, RELINED, 28.75" X 49.5". FRAMED 39.25" X 59.25".JOHN AND JAMES BARD, New York, 1815-1897, Portrait of the Gold Rush steamer Wilson G. Hunt. Signed and dated lower right "Drawn and painted by J&J Bard, NY 1849". Inscribed at bottom "Steamer connecting Coney Island, Shreveburg, Red Bank & 'W...Cilly' [indistinct] New York Captain A.H. Haggerty - Commander 1849 For T. Hunt Bros. N.J. Built by Thom. & Wm. Colyer N.Y. Engines of Wilson G. Hunt built by H.R. Nenham N.Y. Drawn & painted by J & J Bard N.Y. 1849". Provenance: The Mariner's Museum, Newport News, Virginia. Northeast Auctions, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, March 2001. The Kelton Collection of Marine Art & Artifacts, acquired from the above at that sale. Literature: See J & J Bard Picture Painters, by Anthony J. Peluso (Hudson River Press, 1977), p. 7-9 for a reference to this painting, noting it is one of the last paintings signed by John and James Bard, and John Bard's demise., The Wilson G. Hunt was built at New York in 1849 for the excursion trade to Coney Island, but on March 2, 1850, shortly after her completion, she was sent around the Horn to San Francisco, arriving there in early 1850. She was immediately placed in the Sacramento River trade and became a "bonanza steamer," carrying gold speculators to the gold fields. She proceeded to make a fortune for her owners, clearing over $1 million in her first year. The steamer was sent to Victoria, British Columbia in August 1858, and ran for a short time on the New Westminster route. In October 1858 she was withdrawn, and then in the following year she replaced the steamer Constitution on Puget Sound. Early in the 1860s she was bought by the Oregon Steam Navigation Company and taken to the Columbia River, where she operated on the Cascade Route under command of Captain John Wolf. She ran on the Columbia until 1869, carrying from 250 to 300 passengers, 100 head of stock and a substantial amount of freight on a single trip. The Wilson G. Hunt was rebuilt in 1865, and in 1869 she returned to Puget Sound. She continued to be used on various runs until 1890, when she was broken up and sold for iron scrap to Cohn & Company of San Francisco. Her hull was burned shortly thereafter. Twin brothers John and James Bard were self-taught ship portraitists who specialized in steamships. The painting of the Wilson G. Hunt was one of the last two paintings signed jointly by the Bard brothers, and it has been speculated that John Bard went off in search of gold shortly after the completion of this work. By March of 1850 James Bard was the only signer of these works. After November 1855, John reappears and is known to have become a "destitute painter" in and out of New York almshouses until his death October 18, 1856. James lived a long and artistically productive life. He died 41 years after his brother, on March 26, 1897. Dimensions: Oil on canvas, relined, 28.75" x 49.5". Framed 39.25" x 59.25".

GOLD RUSH-ERA JOURNAL OF THE BRIG "AMELIA" ON A VOYAGE FROM MAINE TO SAN FRANCISCO NOVEMBER 1849-MAY 1850 13.5" X 8.5".GOLD RUSH-ERA JOURNAL OF THE BRIG "AMELIA" ON A VOYAGE FROM MAINE TO SAN FRANCISCO, November 1849-May 1850, "Journal of a Voyage from Eastport ME To San Francisco_U_C In The Herm' Brig Amelia. Captain Joseph Clark Mate Charles Folsom 2d J.D. Norwood". Twenty-thousand word journal featuring a watercolor frontispiece and seven well-drawn tipped-in watercolor illustrations. Kept by Capt. Clark, with additional daily entries by D.C. Powers of Eastport, Maine, describing his voyage aboard the hermaphrodite brig Amelia from Eastport to the California gold fields, commencing November 12, 1849 and terminating in the harbor at San Francisco on May 3, 1850. Well-written in a legible hand. Watercolor illustrations depict highlights from the voyage, including a highly detailed hand-drawn and colored map of Amelia's track around Cape Horn. With title page, printed list of passengers and crew, Abstract Log, map of rounding Cape Horn, and a daily journal of the voyage with additional illustrations of the voyage. Later leather and marbleized covers, the interior front cover marked with a list of the various owners (see provenance below). Illustrations: Track Around Cape Horn - Frontispiece Cape Horn Bearing NW by W - Opposite entry for Feb. 10 Brig Amelia in a Gale of Wind - Entry for Feb. 16 Critical Situation for the Brig Amelia - Entry for Feb. 27 Island of Massafuero - Entry for March 7 Cumberland Bay, Juan Fernandez - Entry for March 12 Drawing of a (Devil) Fish - Entry for May 8 Dimensions: 13.5" x 8.5". Provenance: D.C. Powers, Eastport, Maine.Captain Joseph Clark, Eastport, Maine.Herman M. Lowe, Eastport, Maine.Florence Lowe Green, Eastport, Maine.Edna Green (1925).Alice Marion Green.Edward 'Ted' Thomas.Hyland Granby Antiques, Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. The Kelton Collection of Marine Art & Artifacts.Notes:This is a rare and important Gold Rush-era document that chronicles one "forty-niners" journey by sea to the California gold fields. It includes descriptions of daily life aboard ship, the harrowing passage around Cape Horn and the author's impressions of San Francisco at the height of the Gold Rush. Information regarding the hermaphrodite brig Amelia so far is purely speculative -- the illustrations show a relatively small vessel rigged in this fashion, with a clipper bow with a figurehead and a square stern with no galleries, a fairly common design for Maine-built ships. It is likely Amelia was launched from one of the northern yards in the Machias district of Maine. Fairburns, records no vessel of any rig named Amelia whose construction date would coincide with the dates of the voyage.

1852 WASS, MOLITOR & CO. (SAN FRANCISCO) $10 GOLD LARGE HEAD COINthis is a rare Territorial gold issue with limited numbers of survivors today, as most of these were melted down by the soon-to-be-opened San Francisco branch mint, which came online in 1854, and standardized coinage in the region with some effort. These designs were employed to mimic the existing $10 gold coins in circulation at the time, which were produced in 1852 in either Philadelphia or New Orleans, far from the mines of San Francisco, hence the number of private minters that sprang up during the early years of the Gold Rush.
