GOLFING WITH ROBERT, BOBBY & IKE
GOLFING WITH ROBERT, BOBBY & IKE Lots 909-925 in this auction are associated with the golfing life of Robert Woodruff.
Georgia like Scotland is ?golf? country. Nothing heralds that fact more than the Grand-Slam championship of Georgia?s favorite so - Robert Tyre Jones, Jr. and, of course, HIS golf course in Augusta. The Augusta National Golf Club, a 365-acre site also referred to as the ?Masters? was founded by Bobby Jones along with Clifford Jones in 1932. It is perhaps one of the most exclusive golf clubs in the world.
Robert Tyre (Bobby) Jones and Robert Woodruff were very close friends with each sharing personal and professional associations throughout their individual lives. Bobby Jones regularly enjoyed the ?relaxed? venue of Ichauway Plantation as well as the other Woodruff residences, and it was under Bobby Jones? direction that the famous Capital City Club birthday party for Woodruff achieved its enviable success.
Their close association is self-evident in the birthday letter from Bobby and Eisenhower to Woodruff.
Bobby Jones was also very close to Dwight Eisenhower encouraging Ike to play at August - it didn?t take much prodding - and regularly helping to develop that ?winning? swing in the President?s game. Golfweek in its December 1999 issue declared Eisenhower as ?Golfer of the Century.?
In hindsight, Bobby Jones, Dwight Eisenhower, and Robert Woodruff were 20th century America?s Three Musketeers, as was apparent in their camaraderie.
Bobby Jones would also make sure that each of his books was duly signed and inscribed to ?Bob? - some of those are in this auction as is the only known remaining Robert W. Woodruff monogrammed golf club in private hands.
