Federal mahogany lady's desk, two-part construction, highly figured mahogany veneers, paneled upper doors opening to fitted interior with four tiger maple drawers, lower case with fold-over writing flap and three long drawers, turned feet, white pine secondary, New England, early 19th century, 55 x 38 x 21-1/2 in. Old refinishing, normal cracks and abrasions, some repairs at hinges, brasses replaced (no plugged holes), legs and skirt replaced, scattered minor patches and repairs.

MASSACHUSETTS SENATE CHAMBER CARVED MAHOGANY PEDESTAL D...mid to late 19th century, shaped top, blocked and paneled frieze, foliate mounted pilasters flanking a carved medallion depicting the Massachusetts state seal, kneehole configuration of drawers, interior collection label, 30-1/2 x 65-1/2 x 33-1/2 in.

Note: According to an "Old South Collection, 1876" label found inside one of the desk's drawers, this desk was used in the Massachusetts Senate Chambers by Governors John Albion Andrew (in office 1861-1866) and Roger Wolcott (in office 1897-1900).
