Joseph Galloway British Tory DS
Joseph Galloway British Tory DS 1767 DS 2pp 8 x 13 in. Philadelphia 23 Oct. 1767. Summary of land titles to demonstrate ownership of a 1000 acre piece signed by Galloway Joseph (1731-1803). Apparently the land in question was thought to be in Maryland when a temporary survey line was run but a later permanent survey placed them in Pennsylvania where William Penn seems to have given some of the land to other persons (presumably since no owner was listed in that state).Joseph Galloway was a Philadelphia attorney and member of the Pennsylvania Provisional Assembly (1756-1774). He served on the first Continental Congress and proposed a "Plan of Union" to avoid a revolution. When his plan was rejected he drifted toward the Loyalist position. In spite of that he was an intimate friend of Benjamin Franklin. When the Revolution came Galloway fled to England and never returned to North America. Condition: Folds one complete separation. Some toning and water stain on about half the document.
