Life of Field Marshall His Grace the Duke of Wellington with Autographed Letter Signed by the Duke London: Henry Colburn 1840. 2 vols both having engraved frontispieces of the Duke. Red buckram boards and 3/4 red morocco with gilt tooled spines having six compartments. Hand written letter signed by the Duke written as a petition to the House of Lords dated 1845 regarding abuses in Coroners inquests.

Condition
Small area of residue above and to the left of the head, and some abrasion lines near the left sight edge. Under blacklight inspection, there is a thin layer of overpainting on the coat's contours, which dulls the original more brightly painted contours. No other in-painting or over-painting.

Arthur Wellesley was one of the commanders who won and ended the Napoleonic Wars when the coalition defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR LETTER 1779ALS from Georgia colonel Leonard Marbury to Major General Benjamin Lincoln, January 1779. Mentions the appointment of Samuel Elbert to Brigadier General (see Lot #67). Some other interesting content: "The spy I mentioned to you disappointed me ...I have not had an opportunity of hearing any thing from the enemy." Wax seal intact. Open, the letter measures about 9" x 13-3/4". Includes old engraving of General Lincoln. This document is one of several dozen important signed pieces in today'sale that were part of a large collection of American historical documents from 1650 through WWII. The estate collection, assembled from about 1920-1960, has never been offered for sale at auction. See images. This item can be shipped in-house.
