GRANDMA (ANNA ROBERTSON) MOSES
GRANDMA (ANNA ROBERTSON) MOSES (NY/VA, 1860-1961) 'Oh for a Slide' oil on board, signed lower center, with original artist's label verso giving title and date of Nov. 5, 1947, Galerie St. Etienne (North America's oldest gallery and the gallery who discovered "Grandma" Moses), rights reserved stamp verso, depicting children playing on frozen mill pond, adults on embankments, distant New England church; in original silver and blue molded stick frame with artist painted dimensional liner, SS: 8 1/2" x 10 1/2", OS: 11 1/2" x 17 1/2". Good condition with minor crazing, light stains. Copyright Grandma Moses Properties Co., New York. All reproduction rights are reserved.
The painting is listed in the Grandma Moses Catalogue Raisonne by Otto Kallir as painting #717. Moses listed the painting on the label as painting #1222 (this is faint but also visible on the label on the back). Moses didn't consecutively number her paintings which Kallir corrected in the Catalogue Raisonne. The painting title, Oh for a Slide, and size (9" x 11") are listed in the artist's Record Book, done by Moses, on page 43.
Born in Greenwich, NY, Anna Mary Robertson Moses, known by her nickname Grandma Moses, was an American folk artist. She began painting in earnest at the age of 78, lived to 101. Marrying a farmer in 1887, she eventually gave birth to 10 children (5 of whom survived past infancy). She drew on her memories of farm life to create her naive, bucolic paintings.
