PAIR OF ENGLISH VICTORIAN JOHN HUNTPAIR OF ENGLISH VICTORIAN JOHN HUNT AND ROBERT ROSKELL PARCEL-GILT STERLING FIGURAL COMPOTS, COAT-OF-ARMS OF THE GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY AND BARONETS OF GOOCH, LONDON, DATED 1872 9 ½" x 7 ¾" Custom made pair of sterling parcel-gilt figural compots, dedicated to commemorate the Great Western Railway and its Chairman Sir Daniel Gooch, 1st Baronet; fashioned in the Renaissance Revival style, baluster form stem supporting round urn shape bowl with beaded border highlights, flanked with fully sculpted male and female figures in 18th century garments, on tapered quatrefoil base, applied nautical cable (the baronetcy was conferred on him in recognition of his services to the successful submersion of the Atlantic Telegraph Cables of 1865 and 1866); adorned with double armorial shields with of Coat-of-arms of the Great Western Railway, incorporating the shields and crests of the cities of London (left) and Bristol (right), and coat-of-arms of Baronets of Gooch on the opposite side. Lavishly decorated in carved High Renaissance style leaf and foliate design with applied patina; crystal bowls of choice can be selected additionally. Fully marked with John Hunt and Robert Roskell hallmark, Queen's head, lion passant, leopard head and date letter (for 1872) on each base and bowl, also marked Hunt & Roskell 6118 on the base rim. Total weight 121.43 toz.
