ARCHAIC GREEK BRONZE KNEELING
ARCHAIC GREEK BRONZE KNEELING NUDE KOUROS (MALE YOUTH)Ancient Greece, Archaic to Classical Period, ca. 640 to 430 BCE. A cast-bronze figure of a nude male youth called a kouros in a kneeling position with feet drawn up onto his toes. The boy places both hands atop his thighs while kneeling atop a petite rectangular cushion or step, perhaps meant to be facing towards a temple or a priest, with shallow musculature and gently sloped shoulders defining his physique. Delicately incised facial features create the stylized physiognomy while his coiffure is draped behind his ears and down his back; a tall, tongue-shaped projection rises behind his head, perhaps hair. Smooth layers of green and brown patina have developed over the centuries and attest to its timeless beauty. Size: 1.6" L x 1.3" W x 4.25" H (4.1 cm x 3.3 cm x 10.8 cm); 5.6" H (14.2 cm) on included custom stand.
For discussions on kouros figures and nude figures, see Troili, E. et al., Treasures From Tuscany - The Etruscan Legacy, Edinburgh, 2004; Richter, G.M.A., A Handbook of Greek Art,, Phaidon Press, Oxford, 1987, pp.185-206; and Mattusch, C.C., Greek Bronze Statuary, Cornell University Press, New York, 1994.

GREEK ARCHAIC POTTERY PROTOME
GREEK ARCHAIC POTTERY PROTOME (VOTIVE HEAD)Western Greece, Archaic Period, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A lovely mold-made earthenware protome of a female face, probably a goddess, with a slender visage, comprised of ovoid eyes, a prominent nose, full lips, and a protruding chin. Her arched brows sit just below a curved hairline that stretches from one naturalistic ear to the other, framing her entire profile. All is surmounted by a large headdress. This example would have been painted with bright colors upon completion. It is perforated through the top of the head for suspension, probably in a personal altar in a home. She is set in a modern frame with a cloth matte for easy and elegant display. Size: 3.8" W x 6" H (9.7 cm x 15.2 cm); of frame: 15" W x 17" H (38.1 cm x 43.2 cm)

ETRUSCAN TERRACOTTA HEAD OF A
ETRUSCAN TERRACOTTA HEAD OF A MALE YOUTHClassical World, Etruria (Italy), ca. 5th century BCE. An impressively naturalistic pottery head of a young boy featuring idealized characteristics. Crowned by a wavy coiffure, the child gazes outward from generously-lidded eyes beneath arched brows. His visage displays a petite nose, full cheeks, and bowed lips, all flanked by a pair of prominent ears. As was customary of Etruscan sculpture, this piece was mold-made. At this time symbolic human figures were favored over veristic portraiture intended to represent specific individuals which would develop later in Rome. Size: 4.8" W x 8.5" H (12.2 cm x 21.6 cm); 10.8" H (27.4 cm) on included custom stand.
