SUPERB 19TH C. EUROPEAN GILT
SUPERB 19TH C. EUROPEAN GILT BRASS GRIFFIN STATUEWestern Europe, England / France, Victorian to Edwardian era, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful cast-brass griffin statue with light remains of gold gilding and exceptionally sharp details on the wings! The stately beast sits with wings erect and staring nobly forward with the sinuous tail curled over his haunches. The rear legs have pierced holes and an opening on the base that may have been attached to an architectural element or an andiron. The griffin was a fierce symbol of divine strength. The tradition was long lasting - we know of examples from ancient Iran and Egypt that are from ca. 3000 BCE - and the animal continued to appear in classically-inspired art into the early modern period as symbols of power and protection. According to Graeco-Roman mythology, griffins lived in the Riphaean Mountains of Scythia and guarded rich gold deposits. Size: 9" L x 3" W x 11" H (22.9 cm x 7.6 cm x 27.9 cm)
Provenance: private Rancho Mirage, California, USA collection, by inheritance in 2020; ex-Dr. TDR Berreth, California, USA, acquired before 1982

PORTRAIT PAINTING OF A EUROPEAN
PORTRAIT PAINTING OF A EUROPEAN NOBLEMAN, FULL LENGTHContinental school, possibly Spanish, oil on canvas life-sized portrait of a nobleman depicted standing full length in an interior setting against a draped background and red carpet. The subject has grey hair and facial hair and is attired in an ermine-trimmed embroidered short cloak or cape emblazoned with a red Crusaders or Templar cross, an ornate gold livery collar or chain of office around his upper shoulders with central griffin, black leather pants and boots, with his right hand on a short sword and his left hand resting on the handle of a sword visible at his hip. Housed in a modern carved gilt Hudson River style frame from Bennett Galleries, Knoxville. First quarter of 19th century or earlier. Sight: 81 1/2" H x 35 1/2" W. Framed: 92" H x 45 1/2" W. Note: The gold livery collar is similar to those conferred to the Chivalric Order the Jar/Griffin, founded by Ferdinand I of Aragon in 1403. The jar of lilies links symbolize the Virgin Mary while the griffin can be interpreted as a symbol of war against the infidel. This painting may depict Ferdinand I or one of his Castilian descendants as the original Crest of Castile and Leon featured a golden griffin. This crest fell out of use in the 15th century as the griffin was replaced by a lion.
Condition:
Painting is in overall good condition with areas of retouch and later varnishing visible throughout under UV light inspection, primarily to the background. Canvas is lined, and stretcher appears to be contemporary.
