The original service contained over 300 pieces, of which 297 pieces were sold at Sotheby Parke Bernet New York in 1975. The service was designed after the Indian spoon and the Indian statuette by Grosjean and was patented in February 1885. The multi-motif pattern featured twelve bas relief terminal designs depicting Native American dancers and buffalo Indian dancers. The design was drafted by Charles T. Grosjean, inspired by "Caitlin's Illustrations of North American Indians" and "Objects from the National Museum, Washington, D.C.," according to Tiffany's archives.
