JULES-ALEXANDRE GRÜN (FRENCH 1868-1934) A PRINT, "LA CI...JULES-ALEXANDRE GRÜN (French 1868-1934) A PRINT, "La Cigale / Pour Qui Votait-On," 1898, lithograph printed in colors; 51 1/4'' x 36 1/4'', framed 56'' x 41''. Note: Grün was a post-impressionist painter, but is most known for his lithographic posters. He worked at a large printing company and his artistic director was Jules Chéret who was also his main competitor. Both men took inspiration from the posters of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and contributed to the flourishing of Belle Époque poster art during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The title of this piece roughly translates to "Who Would You Vote For?" which was the name of a popular review at the Cigale theater where the audience would vote for their favorite performer. The large woman in the red and yellow dress is the famed entertainer Jeanne Bloch.
