SIGNED WILLIAM DRAPER WWII PAINTING
SIGNED WILLIAM DRAPER WWII PAINTING - LANDING AT GUAMWilliam Franklin Draper (American, 1912-2003). Study for mural "Landing at Guam" oil on heavy gauge illustration board, ca. 1943 CE. Signed "Wm. F. Draper" on lower right. An action-packed composition by combat artist William Draper featuring soldiers rushing to the coast of Guam during World War II. Notice that Draper painted the scene as viewed through the window of a ship, replete with spouts of water projecting up from the embattled waters, a burning vessel with red flames and plumes of smoke in the sea, and a crowd of soldiers making their way to shore. In 1942, William Draper joined the Navy, and served as a combat artist when stationed on the Aleutian Islands and in the South Pacific. He observed and painted battle scenes on Bougainville, Guam, Saipan, and other locations, as well as genre scenes of soldiers who were not engaged in combat but rather between battles. This piece was a study for a mural entitled "Landing at Guam" that Draper painted for the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Combat artists like Lieutenant Draper certainly did not shy away from dangerous wartime conditions but rather bravely recorded the alarming events as they unfolded. Size: 13.625" L x 34" W (34.6 cm x 86.4 cm)
William Franklin Draper was born in Hopedale, Massachusetts on December 24, 1912. A child prodigy, he studied classical piano at Harvard University. He later changed his focus to fine art and studied with Charles Webster Hawthorne and Henry Hensche in Provincetown, Rhode Island. Draper also attended the National Academy of Design in New York and the Cape Cod School of Art in Massachusetts. Then he traveled to Spain and studied with Harry Zimmerman, moved on to France and attended the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. In 1937, he moved to Boston to study sculpture with George Demetrius and also studied with Jon Corbino in beautiful Rockport, Massachusetts. In 1942, Draper joined the Navy and served as a combat artist when stationed on the Aleutian Islands and in the South Pacific. He observed and painted battle scenes on Bougainville, Guam, Saipan, and other locations, as well as genre scenes of soldiers who were not engaged in combat but rather at work and at play. National Geographic magazine reproduced 25 of his war images in four issues in 1944. In 1945, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. organized a group exhibition of works by five official war artists, including Draper. That same year the Metropolitan Museum of Art included Draper in an exhibition entitled, ''The War Against Japan.'' Draper was also featured in a PBS television show about combat artists entitled, "They Drew Fire" in May of 2000. After the war, Draper opened a studio on Park Avenue in New York City and continued to not only paint, but also play classical and jazz piano.
Draper's career spanned seven decades. In addition to painting WWII battle scenes, he painted landscapes, floral still lifes, interiors, and was an accomplished portraitist. In fact, Draper's subjects included a portrait of John F. Kennedy that hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. based upon an oil sketch for which the president sat in 1962. Draper was actually the only artist who painted JFK from life. Draper showed at Knoedler, the Graham Gallery, Portraits, Inc., the Far Gallery, The Findlay Galleries (New York, NY) and the Robert C. Vose Galleries (Boston, MA). His work has been included in shows at the National Portrait Gallery and the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), The National Academy of Design (New York, NY), The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, (Boston, MA) the Fogg Art Museum, (one of the Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, MA), the National Gallery, (London), Salon de la Marine (Paris) and in museums in Australia. Draper also taught at the Art Students League of New York, and received a lifetime achievement award from the Portrait Society of America in 1999.
Provenance: The William F. Draper Collection, New York City, USA, acquired via descent from the late William Franklin Draper (1912-2003), an accomplished American artist whose career spanned seven decades. Known as the "Dean of American Portraiture," William Draper was the only artist to paint President John F. Kennedy from life, and his oeuvre includes marvelous landscapes from his world travels, military paintings as he was one of only seventeen Combat Artists in WWII, and portraits of illustrious individuals.

CHRIS CALLE (B. 1961) DIVER IN
CHRIS CALLE (B. 1961) DIVER IN CHUUK LAGOONChris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Diver in Chuuk Lagoon" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published as the Federated States of Micronesia lower left stamp on the 32c Chuuk Lagoon Se-tenant Block of 4 issued February 6, 1995.
Measuring 38 miles in diameter and reaching depths of more than 300 feet, Chuuk Lagoon is regarded as one of the best diving spots in the world. It is estimated that over 100 sunken ships as well as scores of aircraft and submarine wreckage litter the lagoon bed. Many are remnants of World War II. In 1944, Allied forces began a relentless push across the Pacific toward Japan. During this campaign, the lagoon -- which had become a large base of operations -- was the scene of continuous bombing, strafing and torpedo runs aimed at disabling this vital Japanese stronghold. Enhancing the myriad coral-encrusted wrecks found in Chuuk Lagoon is a fascinating display of marine life. The snorkelers, divers, underwater photographers and scientists who flock to this intriguing world beneath the sea are treated to a magnificent kaleidoscope of engaging creatures. Colorful clown triggerfish, exotic lion fish and schools of blue devil fish flit among fields of brilliantly hued coral, providing a show like nothing above the surface.

CHRIS CALLE (B. 1961) "MICRONESIA"Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Micronesia (Issued by U.S.)" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Maximum Card for the Federated States of Micronesia/U.S. Compact of Free Association stamp issued September 28, 1990.
Flung across the vast sapphire Western Pacific to the north of Australia and south of Japan, the Federated States of Micronesia comprise more than 600 islands and islets. Like tiny ships bobbing on a vast expanse of ocean, the area encompassed by the Federated States is mostly saltwater; Ferdinand Magellan, sailing through their midst in 1521, failed to spot a single island. Yet people have inhabited these islands for as much as 3,500 years, making their living from the sea and farming the small portions of arable land. In more recent centuries, the islands have been claimed by colonial Spain, imperial Germany and Japan. During World War II, the islands were wrenched from the control of Japan by the United States. Following the war, the area was placed under the auspices of the United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands and administered by the United States. Today, the Re Mathau or People of the Deep Sea -- as many of the islands' more than 100,000 citizens are known -- claim their independence due to a pact signed with the United States in 1982. Under this agreement, called the Compact of Free Association, the Federated States of Micronesia have control of their own government with the United States being responsible for external security, defense and financial assistance to the islands. The compact came into force with the dissolution of the Trust Territory in 1986.

CHRIS CALLE (B. 1961) "MARSHALL
CHRIS CALLE (B. 1961) "MARSHALL ISLANDS"Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Marshall Islands (Issued by U.S.)" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor/Pencil/Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Maximum Card for the Republic of the Marshall Islands/U.S. Compact of Free Association stamp issued September 28, 1990.
Change has been a way of life for the people of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Over the centuries, the people of the islands have adapted to the subtle changes in nature, but life in the last one hundred years has been much more dramatic. In the final years of the 19th century, the islands were claimed by Germany and governed by that faraway country for over two decades. By the end of the First World War a new government had laid claim to the islands: Japan. Held for three decades by Japan, the islands were liberated by U. S. forces in World War II, and were designated a United Nations Trust Territory in 1947. Under this umbrella, the Marshall Islands moved to a much-desired independence. Today, after more than one hundred years of dealing with one distant government after another, the people of the Marshall Islands are in control of their own destiny. The first of many important steps was taken in that direction in 1979, when the Marshallese adopted a constitution. In 1982, the people signed an agreement, called the Compact of Free Association, which envisioned complete self-government. The compact came into force when the Trust Territory was dissolved in 1986 and the Marshall Islands became independent. The people of the islands elected a thirty-three member parliament, called the Nitijela, to oversee matters on the islands. The parliament, in turn, elected a president.
