Born in Stockholm, he studied with Carl Larsson, and was his assistant in finishing the frescoes at the Svenska National Museum. Interested in the Folk Art of Sweden, he founded the Rackstad Colony in Varmland with his wife, Kerstin Maja Fjaestad. Today, his work is in the collections of the National Museum of Sweden in Stockholm, and the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, among others.
