Thomas Browne (1605-1682) was an English physician and author with interests ranging from archaeology to natural science to religion. He studied at Winchester College and Pembroke College Oxford as well as various European univerisites receiving an MD from Leiden in 1633. He settled in Norwich where he lived and practiced medicine from 1637 until his death in 1682. His works have been referenced and admired by notables such as Edgar Allan Poe Samuel Johnson and even Stephen Jay Gould. Condition: Leather flaking from newer boards. Slight toning especially of page edges and margin of long side. Overall tight and clean.

BYRON BROWNE?—SELF PORTRAIT O/C, 1949Self-portrait oil on canvas painting, possibly by Byron Browne (American, 1907-1961). Signed with a BB monogram at the subject's left shoulder, with notation verso "3 Hr. Myself, april 1949." Painting measures 13" x 15", unframed. The notation verso is in the style, with similar handwriting, that Browne used to title and sign many of his paintings. Subject also very much resembles the artist. Very good condition.
