Note: This painting spans the cusp of Neoclassicism and Romanticism with its Classical figures from the Greek myth about Ariadne and its Romantic atmospheric painting technique. Ariadne is depicted here in brilliant red as she is in John Vanderlyn's painting of the same myth. She sleeps as Theseus is led by Athena to his ship as ordered to do by Bacchus who wished to take Ariadne for his bride.

BRONZE HERCULES SCULPTURE 16" x 9 ½" x 5 ?" Patinated bronze sculpture of a classical nude male, cloth draped around the midsection, one wrist with remnants of chains. On black square base. Artist rendition of the myth prior to the twelve labors. According to some versions, Hercules murders his children, is declared mad and put in chains to restrain his unnatural strength. He would go on to accomplish all the labors as atonement for his crime.
