- Southern School mid-19th c. "David Franklin
Southern School mid-19th c. "David Franklin McCrary (1812-1885)" and his wife "Elizabeth Cowan Lowry McCrary (1826-1901)" each oil on canvas affixed to masonite unsigned 28 in. x 23 in. oval and 34 in. x 26 in. oval respectively giltwood frames. Provenance: Descended in the McCrary family. Note: David Franklin McCrary is most noted as the builder of Magnolia Hall Greensboro Alabama. He and his wife Elizabeth Lowry were married May 9 1842 in Green County and later resided in Birmingham. A painting exists listed in the Smithsonian archives of Mrs. McCrary possibly by William Frye or Nicola Marschall. This portrait pair too bears a striking resemblance to the style of portraiture practiced by Frye.
