19TH C. TLINGIT / HAIDA BONE PENDANT EAGLE HEAD SHAMANNative American, Pacific Northwest Coast, United States or Canada, Tlingit or Haida people, ca. 19th century CE. A marine mammal bone amulet and pendant in the form of a stylized eagle head. Shamans wore protective pendants or charms such as this piece that were imbued with power from sacred animals and ancestral emblems during healing rituals. The charm would hold and protect the ill person's soul and the eagle would guide their spirit through supernatural realms. This bone has developed a dark gray patina from over the years of use. Size: 6" L x 1.25" W (15.2 cm x 3.2 cm)
