Theora Hamblett
Theora Hamblett (American/Mississippi 1893-1977) "A Game of Tennis" oil on canvas signed and dated "'69" lower left 16 1/8 in. x 19 1/8 in. framed. Note: Embraced by the Mississippi art community Hamblett's paintings often reflecting reminiscences of her childhood and career as a teacher were and still are enthusiastically collected by local museums and private collectors. Hamblett did not become interested in art until later in life when she enrolled in local art classes and later at Famous Art School correspondence course. Painting became increasingly important to the emerging artist and just four years later the New York City art dealer Betty Parsons recognized Hamblett's unique talent and began the successful promotion of her career. Hamblett employs her favored palette of pale hues and stylized dots of color for the leaves of the trees to create this engaging painting of children at play.
