JAMES HAMILTON (1819-1878) OIL MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPEJames Hamilton (Pennsylvania, 1819-1878) Untitled (Evening Mountain View) Oil on canvas 24" x 36" A mountain panorama in evening light, signed to the bottom left. Presented in a gilt cassetta-style frame that measures 27 1/2" x 40". James Hamilton was called the "American Turner" for his similar stylistic sensibilities to renowned English Romantic painter JMW Turner. During his time in Philadelphia, James Hamilton notably taught the legendary American landscape painter Thomas Moran.
Condition
Good condition, noting some craquelure to the paint layer. There are a several areas of thin paint layer at the edges of the canvas just inside the frame sight. No notable issues observed under blacklight.

Portrait of James the Duke of Hamilton Oil on Canvas British a portrait of James the Duke of Hamilton unsigned with identification inscribed u.l. and on verso; 28.75 x 24 in.In addition the lot includes a letter from Dr. Rosalind K. Marshall Assistant Keeper of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery dated 17 May 1996. In the letter Marshall verifies that the painting is indeed of James the 5th Duke of Hamilton. Marshall goes on to say that this painting is a copy of a picture done by Jeremish Davison which resides in a private collection. In the painting the Duke is wearing the ''star and sash of the Order of the Thistle.'' Marshall ends her letter by stating that the original painting was completed in 1723 after he became the Knight of the Thistle. Condition: Relined with craquelure.
