MEISSEN PORCELAIN GROUP OF HARLEQUIN AND COLUMBINEThe underside marked with crossed swords in underglaze blue, and with the number D287, and number 10. Harlequin dressed in his iconic pattern breeches, with large black bowtie, black cap, and mask, embracing Columbine, dressed in a layered crinoline dress, both in ballet shoes, on an oval base. Height 11.5 in. Width 9 in. (Cond: chip to rear of oval base) Created in 1913 by Paul Scheurich. The figures represented in this porcelain group are derived from the 1910 premier of Michael Fokine’s ballet, Le Carnival, performed by Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballet Russe, with Nijinsky dancing the lead role of Harlequin.
