WHALING HARPOON. American mid 19th century iron. Lewis Temple-type toggle-headed harpoon with rope lashing possibly original. Expected wear. 33 1/2''l. Born a slave in Virginia Lewis Temple (1800-1854) obtained his freedom and worked as a blacksmith in New Bedford Massachusetts. He developed the toggle-headed harpoon in 1848.
