WHALING HARPOON. American midWHALING HARPOON. American mid 19th century iron. Lewis Temple-type toggle-headed harpoon with rope lashing possibly original. Expected wear. 33 1/2''l. Born a slave in Virginia Lewis Temple (1800-1854) obtained his freedom and worked as a blacksmith in New Bedford Massachusetts. He developed the toggle-headed harpoon in 1848.

Measuring 11.25 by 16 in., overall 15 by 18 in. (Cond: discoloring, edges tattered, mainly lower edge)
