Harry Gottlieb, painter, screenprinter, educator, and lithographer, was born September 23rd, 1895 in Bucharest, Rumania. He immigrated to America in 1907, and his family settled in Minneapolis. From 1915 to 1917, Gottlieb attended the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. After a short stint as an illustrator for the U.S. Navy, Gottlieb moved to New York City. He became a scenic and costume designer for Eugene O"Neill's Provincetown Theater Group. He also studied at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design. Gottlieb was one of America's first Social Realist painters, influenced by the Robert Henri-led movement in New York City. He was also a pioneer in screen printing, which he learned while working for the Works Progress Administration (WPA).

William P. Gottlieb (American
William P. Gottlieb (American 1917-2006) "Billie Holiday" silver gelatin photograph signed lower left signed titled inscribed "#A" dated "c. 1945" and photographer's stamp en verso 20 in. x 16 in. attractively matted and framed. Note: In the 1930s the Brooklyn born Gottlieb was writing a weekly jazz column for the Washington Post. Informed by the newspaper that they would not fund a photographer to accompany him on his nightclub jaunts Gottlieb purchased an inexpensive camera and cajoled the Post's staff photographers into teaching him the rudiments of their craft. He went on to capture some of the most iconic images of Jazz musicians. Gottlieb credited the success of his images to his knowledge and understanding of the music itself; "I learned to shoot very carefully. I knew the music. I knew in advance when the right moment would arrive. It was purposeful shooting." This image of Billie Holiday is one of the singer's most recognizable and embodies the beauty and torment of her performance. Gottlieb had a deep appreciation and understanding of Holiday and he once wrote; "The haunting anguished voice of Billie Holiday...is one of the glories of music so I was fortunate to have heard her...when she was at her peak." Figure Eight , 1967
Silkscreen, signed and dated lower left, edition 61/75
Gestural forms in black on a field of grey, framed.
Adolph Gottlieb was a prominent American painter and member of the first generation of Abstract Expressionists. Characterized by an idiosyncratic use of abstraction that utilized pictographs and mythological symbols, his works achieved an emotional intensity through both color and line. “Today when our aspirations have been reduced to a desperate attempt to escape from evil, and times are out of joint, our obsessive, subterranean and pictographic images are the expression of the neurosis which is our reality,” he once reflected. “To my mind certain so-called abstraction is not abstraction at all. On the contrary, it is the realism of our time.”
