Hart (Scotland/New York, 1823-1894) oil on canvas landscape depicting a creek or small river running through a meadow, a grove of towering trees to the side, and mountains in the distant background. A cloudy sky predominates, but glimpses of brilliant blue sky are visible between small breaks in the clouds. Faint signature lower left W M(?) Hart. Housed in a molded gilt wood frame. Sight - 12" H x 13 1/2" W. Framed - 17 1/4" H x 21" W. Provenance: Property of the Birmingham Museum of Art, ex-Graham Gallery, New York. Biography (Courtesy Askart: The Artists' Bluebook, from the artist's obituary): William Hart, NA., was born in Scotland in 1823 and came to this country with his parents when a child. He was apprenticed to a coach maker in Albany, for whom he painted panel decorations. He then became a portrait painter, and later a landscape painter. In 1840, he exhibited his first work at the National Academy. In 1850, he visited Scotland, and remained there three years. He was made an associate of the National Academy in 1853 and Academician in 1859. He was the first president of the Brooklyn Academy of Design.
Condition:
Overall very good condition with probable relining. Some spots/drips of probable food residue near the tree border, visible under blacklight. Stains to frame liner.
