WOVEN BASKET, MI'KMAQ, NOVA SCOTIA, CA. 1900A flat heavy woven basket fitted to an iron holder with a hoop handle and a single spike leg support, purportedly for gathering flowers. Attributed to Mi'kmaq makers, Nova Scotia, circa 1900. Minor splint damage to rim. H: 30"; W/L: 18"; D/P: 12". FRANCAIS: Panier plat tressé, monté sur un support en fer avec une poignée en cerceau et tige à planter, prétendument pour cueillir des fleurs. Dommages mineurs à l’écore du rebord. Attribué à des artisans Mi'kmaq, N.-É., circa 1900.

(sight), in 19th century gilt wood cushion-molding frame, foxing, toning, some dampstains; frame with abrasions, losses to gilding; oak split egg basket, scattered blue weavers, 6 in., with 12 lacquerware eggs in the Russian style, tradition of being painted in Winston-Salem in the 20th century, many with cracks and losses.

Cylindrical basket woven of ash maple red osier; ht. 15 in.Fiber artist John McQueen an Illinois native received his B.A. from the University of South Florida before receiving his M.F.A. at Temple University's Tyler School of Art.? McQueen has been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship three times: 1977 1979 and 1986.? He works with a variety of natural materials gathered from his Upstate New York farm in Saratoga Springs.? His vesseled works are considered baskets but are not meant to function as containers.? In Rob Pulleyn's The Basketmaker's Art (Lark Books 1992) McQueen described his work: "The baskets I make are branches of trees rearranged and no longer real the way a tree is real." Marialyce Hawke (American, Contemporary, b. 1941) In the form of a flaring bowl with an uneven rim with relief cast exterior in the image of underwater foliage, and with the interior etched with a naturalistic tracery. The foliage on the exterior is matte finished as is the interior tracery, furthering the illusion of depth. The artist's name, Hawke, is cast in the foliage near the base on the outside. Overall it measures approx. 7-3/4"H x 13-1/4"D.
