FANNY CHURBERG (1845-1892) FINNISHFanny Churberg, haystacks, oil on panel, signed lower right, "Belongs to Professor Edelfelt" written verso, 6" h x 9.5" w. Note: As the first Finnish painter to study in Paris, Churberg’s work differed sharply from that of her Finnish contemporaries, who were staunch followers of the conventions of the Dusseldorf school of painting. Her use of colour and fast brush technique demonstrates her enthusiasm for the Finnish countryside. Here, we see her passion for the landscape displayed in the bright yellows of the haystacks contrasting with the intense greens in the grass and warm blues in the sky. Churberg’s work was included in the Clark Museum’s 2018 Exhibit Women in Paris, 1850-1900.
