A friend to many of the artists he collected, Littmann did most of his acquiring of avant-garde art during the 15 years preceding the 1933 installation of the political regime, which forcibly removed and sold a large part of his collection that totaled over 6,000 works. Although Littmann died in 1934, part of the family was able to emigrate to the United States and Israel with a portion of the collection and a continued interest in European art of the early 20th century.
