MRINALINI MUKHERJEE CONTEMPORARY
MRINALINI MUKHERJEE CONTEMPORARY HEMP SCULPTURE India,1950-2015Abstract woven hemp dyed and bleached brown, pink, white, and purple in tangled and draped forms. Mukherjee was the daughter of Benode Behari, a leading figure in the history of Indian modernism. She studied at Maharaja Sayajirao University where artist K.G. Subramanyan was on faculty. Under his guidance, Mukherjee began to experiment with weaving and was quit to dismiss claims that she was making folk art, female art, or fiber art. She was simply using pre modern materials to make modern arts. Her weavings had gone from small and flat to monumental and three dimensional with ethereal and sublime forms. By the 90's Mukherjee moved away from hemp and began using ceramic and bronze. Mukherjee's work titled "Yakshi" is now a part of the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection.
