BRONZES BY JEAN-LEON GEROME
BRONZES BY JEAN-LEON GEROME Gerome was one to the most famous painter/sculptors of the 19th century. He pursued many different styles and techniques, like coloring marble to make the art look "alive". These bronzes represent the 1870's period of his work, where his interest was Roman subjects. His Pollice Verso, made the "thumbs down" gesture popular. The figures are Retiarius with the trident ( 16" tall weighing 6.38 lbs.) and Hoplomachus with the small shield ( 15 ¾" tall weighing 4.68 lbs. ). The bronze castings are period hollow core; using the lost wax process. Retiarius's trident tines and shaft extension, are made from bronze rod.
