Both pencil signed lower right. Housed in later faux burl wood frames. Both measure: Sight - 10 3/4" H x 14 1/2" W. Framed - 19 3/4" H x 23 1/2" W.
Condition:
Etchings overall very good condition. Some minor damage to lower right edge of both frames.

SIR DAVID WILKIE R.A. (1785-1841): STUDY FOR A PORTRAIT OF PRINCE AUGUSTUS FREDERICK DUKE OF SUSSEX (1773-1843) Pen and brown ink and brown wash heightened with gum Arabic on prepared wove paper; 1 3/4 x 1/14 in. PROVENANCE: Richard L. Feigen NY; Acquired from the above 2007. EXHIBITED: Yale 2010 no. 173. The present sheet is a preparatory study for Wilkie's portrait of Prince Augustus Frederick Duke of Sussex (Royal Collection) and can be dated to circa 1833. The pen and ink drawing shows the Prince in full Highland dress accompanied by a hound. He was the sixth son and ninth child of George III and Queen Charlotte. Wilkie employed the technique of drawing on a very small scale as a way of planning compositions on other occasions. For example a group of four pen and brown ink drawings of a similar size and date were included in a sale at Sotheby's on November 22 2007 lot 122.

Each measure 7" tall. Part of a collection of books from Dromoland Castle in today's sale. Provenance: Dromoland Castle, County Clare, Ireland. From the library of Sir Edward O'Brien, 2nd Baronet (1705-1765), inherited by his son, Sir Lucius O'Brien, 3rd Baronet (1731-1795), then by his son, Sir Edward O'Brien, 4th Baronet (1773-1837). The library was pretty much intact until 1962, when Donough O'Brien, the 16th Baron Inchiquin, was forced to sell the castle and its contents at public auction. The December 1962 sale -- conducted by James Adams & Sons of Dublin -- was attended by Gioia Marconi Braga, the daughter of Beatrice O'Brien and inventor Guglielmo Marconi. O'Brien was the daughter of the 14th Baron Inchiquin (1839-1900).
