Ernst Gustav Herta (1846-1917). A late 19th century terracotta figure of a wounded Achilles on circular base signed E Herta and dated 1884 also signed P. Jepsen Kioebnhaun 584 16in. Estimate ?200-300 The arrow is a brass replacement and is poorly painted slightly messy where this joins the leg. Some restoration to two of the fingers of the right hand and also to three of the toes of the right foot. Some smaller repairs to two of the toes on the other foot. Chip to a part of the decoration on the helmet directly below the front plume two chips also to the left side of the plume. Other smaller grazes throughout and small nicks at base. Heavily dirty throughout. Clearly signed and stamped. Biography (courtesy of AskART: The Artists' Bluebook): Sometimes spelled Hermon, Hermann Herzog studied at the Dusseldorf Academy and established himself as an artist early in life, counting Emperor Alexander of Russia and Queen Victoria as his clients. He moved to Philadelphia in 1869 and became fascinated with the American landscape, traveling extensively. He was acclaimed for his ability to capture the changing effects of light and atmosphere and variations in terrain. He exhibited at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia (where he won a medal) and the National Academy of Design. Provenance: Purchased 1980 - Christie's. Private Knoxville, TN collection.
