Carl W. Peters (American, 1897-1980)

In the fall, winter, and spring Peters would paint the landscape around his childhood home. He was especially fond of painting the snow-covered rooftops and icy streams of the region in the winter months. Peters painted images based on the landscapes of Fairport and Rochester and insisted on sketching on the spot, even in severe weather.

JOHN ENCINIAS (AMERICAN, B. 1949)
JOHN ENCINIAS (AMERICAN, B. 1949) "BLUE AND WHITE VASE" Oil on artist board. Signed 'J. Encinias' (lower left). Giltwood frame.Artist BioJohn Encinias (American, b. 1949)
John Encinias is a self-taught artist who started painting at the age of 15. He was encouraged to show his work by professional artists he met while working at a paint supply store. A show at a small gallery in Cherry Creek, Colorado led to Encinias quitting his job to begin working as a full-time professional artist at the age of 25. His paintings are characterized by a subdued and subtle quality, a natural quietness. Encinias, who describes his technique as "impressionistic realism", prefers painting directly from his subjects, whether still-life or landscapes. He works to bring his subjects to life at the level of the senses, using paint to convey smell, touch, temperature - even sound. Encinias restricts his palette to warm and cool versions of the primary colors, softer colors which capture the nuances of color of nature, the hues which change with the seasons. When painting plein air, Encinias works quickly to capture the effect of light. He has said that the most difficult part in painting plein air is avoiding over-refinement before capturing the basic light and color of a given scene.

Albert Carrier-Belleuse was a French sculptor. He was one of the most important and innovative sculptors of 19th century France. Dr. Anita Brookner called him a ‘manipulator of styles’, an epithet addressing Carrier-Belleuse's versatility and fearless experimentation in the fine and decorative arts. Carrier-Belleuse is the name used by this sculptor - born Carrier de Belleuse - on his mature pieces, after initially signing works "A. Carrier." Carrier-Belleuse was an established internationally as a high-art sculptor.
He produced abundantly for a variety of international patrons in most categories of three-dimensional work - public monuments, for example, Masséna (1867, Nice), allegorical reliefs for Parisian buildings (Palais des Tuileries and Banque de France, 1865-1866), tombs for foreign heroes (San Martín Cathedral, Buenos Aires, Argentina), and classicizing figure subjects such as Sleeping Hebe for the Salon (1869, marble; Musée d'Orsay, Paris) - while simultaneously maintaining high visibility in the applied arts. Carrier-Belleuse made many terra cotta pieces, the most famous of which may be The Abduction of Hippodameia depicting the Greek mythological scene of a centaur kidnapping Hippodameia on her wedding day.

DALE CHIHULY (AMERICAN, B. 1941)
DALE CHIHULY (AMERICAN, B. 1941) BLOWN GLASS FORM Signed and initialed 'P.P. -94' (to underside). Dale Chihuly (American, b. 1941)
Dale Chihuly has become an internationally celebrated personality in contemporary art and design, whose prominence in the field of contemporary studio glass is unmatched. During his many years as a teacher, Chihuly made a point of gathering artists from all media to work with him and with glass, with the aim of introducing new points of view and infusing new energy into the process of glassworking.
In 1969, he took leadership of an important glass program at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence, and two years later, he founded Pilchuck Glass School, the premier international school for glass artists, with the Seattle art patrons Anne Gould Hauberg and John Hauberg. Students combined glass and other media in both glassblowing and installation work—often compensating in creative presentation for what they lacked in technique—and they were always encouraged by Chihuly to approach the material in unorthodox ways. With these achievements alone, Chihuly would be recognized for his enduring impact on the American studio glass movement, but he has been able to pursue a prolific and successful career as an artist as well.
While Chihuly’s work has changed dramatically throughout his nearly 50-year career, certain preferences have remained the same. He has always worked glass in a variety of sizes, from small vessels to room-size installations. He has always been interested in sculpture and in outdoor projects where the landscape may be used as a point of departure. Color, on the other hand, has been a gradual acquisition, from the muted, relatively monochromatic 1970s works, such as the Blanket Cylinders and early Seaforms, to the brilliant colors of the Macchias and Venetians in the 1980s and beyond.

(6) WOODY CRUMBO (NATIVE AMERICAN, NEW MEXICO, 1912-1989) ETCHINGS Etchings, each pencil signed. Woody Crumbo was an artist, Native American flute player, and dancer who lived and worked mostly in the West of the United States. He attended government schools as a child and showed such promise that he received a scholarship to the American Indian Institute in Wichita for his last two years of high school. While at the Institute, he became interested in expressing Indian tradition and culture through his art. At the early age of 21, Crumbo was appointed Director of Indian Art at Bacone College, the only institute of higher learning exclusively for Indians. Bacone offered Crumbo the unique opportunity to familiarize himself with his heritage and to instill in him cultural pride. At that time he conducted research into Indian design and revived ancient techniques of silverwork, vegetable dying, and weaving. A Pottawatomie Indian, Crumbo explores in his art the traditions and ceremonies of his own tribe as well as those of the Creek, Sioux, and Kiowa nations. Crumbo works in oil and egg tempera, as well as in watercolor, sculpture, stained glass, and silkscreen. Under the guidance of Olle Nordmark, he also learned etching. The largest collection of Crumbo's work, about 175 paintings, is owned by the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, although his work has been exhibited in many museums throughout the United States.
