AFTER MATHURIN MOREAU (FRENCH 1822-1912) A SCULPTURE, "...after MATHURIN MOREAU (French 1822-1912) A SCULPTURE, "Orpheus and Eurydice," parcel gilt patinated bronze, signed in bronze "Moreau." 21 1/2" x 12" Note: The scene; Orpheus puts down his lyre, his toe crosses into the threshold of the living. In the present sculpture Orpheus' toe extends beyond the cavetto molding of the base, as he leads Eurydice out of the underworld. He turns his head to gaze upon the face of his lost wife before she too crosses the threshold into the land of the living, a fatal misstep. As Orpheus looks back to her, doubting Hades' promise, she will vanish back into the underworld. Height: 21.50" Width: 12.13" Depth: 7.00"
