REHN Ludwig. ''Zur Chirurgie des Herzens und des Herzbeutels '' Archiv f¼r Klinische Chirurgie. Berlin: Verlag von August Hirschwald 1907. pp. 723-778. 8vo. Housed in a black buckram protective custom case with the number ''44'' in pencil on the inside cover of the case a leather label on the case spine and Fleming's gilt goat emblem on the cover above the Fleming family motto ''Let the Deed Shaw''. Note: A rare book from Ian Fleming's library of nineteenth-century science and thought. The article details the first successful suture of the heart completed in 1896 by Ludwig Rehn. At the time Rehn wrote this article in 1907 his patient was still alive. ''Fleming began collecting as a result of his conversations with Percy Muir a bookseller at Dulau's and Elkin Matthews. He first toyed around with collecting modern first editions but they did not really inspire him. He took a rather unexpected and uncharted route when he asked Muir to acquire for him in first editions ''books that marked milestones of progress - books that had started something.'' He sought out the original contributions of scientists whose work was responsible for the great discoveries inventions and theories of the nineteenth century. He had all his purchases specially encased in black buckram fleece-lined boxes with an image of his bookplate on the cover.'' - Lilly Library Indiana University
