Nikolai Troshin was an important painter, theater director, poster designer, and chief artist and designer for influential avant-garde journals such as USSR Under Construction . Having studied at Penza Art Institute under Ivan Goryushkin-Sorokopudov and N. Petrov from 1913-1918, Troshin later moved to Moscow where he studied with Ilya Mashkov from 1918-1920. He actively exhibited since 1918, and personal exhibitions of Troshin`s works were held in Moscow and other cities in Russia through the time of his passing. Troshin`s paintings can be found in the permanent collections of the Tretyakov Museum, State Russian Museum, and many other museums in Russia.

CONDITION
Observed in frame, very fine and stable craquelure overall, most evident againt the dark coat jackets and hats of the men and the gray sky. Scattered losses of paint as well as light surface scuffs, such as along the upper edge. The canvas has been relined. Inspection under UV shows retouching to around 10-15% of the canvas, largely to corners. Scattered retouching to above the seated man, the sky and horses.

Note: Kuznetsov was acclaimed throughout the early years of the 20th c. as a painter of evocative and compelling images which were often imbued with an atmospheric quality reminiscent of the dark brooding Russian folktales of his childhood. As is evidenced in the present lot he employed a painterly brushstroke and sophisticated palette to create works filled with emotion.
