WAX PORTRAIT OF BARTHOLD HEINRICH BROCKES, BY F.W. DUPUT, 18TH CENTURY 7" x 5 ¾" Barthold Heinrich Brockes (September 22, 1680 – January 16, 1747) German author of a collection of religious and nature poems, and his translations of Alexander Pope's "Essay on Man" (1740) and James Thomson's "Seasons" (1745). Wax portrait of the poet by Friederich Wilhelm DuPut (Munich, 1711- Danzig, 1779). From the collection of Leonard Koehler and Albert Schloss. Brockes is depicted in a black moire suit, embroidered cuffs, white, high-collar shirt, and a buttoned embroidered vest. A ruffled cape drapes over his shoulders. He has a gloved left hand, his right hand holding a quill and is resting atop a book numbered "74" to the spine. Rose silk background in an arched wood shadowbox.
