Most of his painting was done in the rural countryside around his hometown of Fairport, New York and around Cape Ann, and the town of Rockport, Massachusetts where he spent his summers painting the harbor and rocky seaside with bold contrasting colors. In the fall, winter, and spring Peters would paint the landscape around his childhood home. He was especially fond of painting the snow-covered rooftops and icy streams of the region in the winter months. Peters painted images based on the landscapes of Fairport and Rochester and insisted on sketching on the spot, even in severe weather.

EADWEARD MUYBRIDGE ANIMAL LOCOMOTION PLATE 78, COPYRIGH...Eadweard Muybridge (English 1830-1904) Animal Locomotion – Plate 78, Copyright 1887 , full margins under the mat
13 in. x 19 in. in. Overall: 22 in. x 28 in.
Eadweard Muybridge (9 April 1830 – 8 May 1904, born Edward James Muggeridge) was an English photographer important for his pioneering work in photographic studies of motion, and early work in motion-picture projection. He adopted the first name Eadweard as the original Anglo-Saxon form of Edward, and the surname Muybridge believing it to be similarly archaic. At age 20, he emigrated to America as a bookseller, first to New York, and then to San Francisco. Planning a return trip to Europe in 1860, he suffered serious head injuries in a stagecoach crash in Texas. He spent the next few years recuperating in England, where he took up professional photography, learning the wet-plate collodion process, and secured at least two British patents for his inventions. He went back to San Francisco in 1867, and in 1868 his large photographs of Yosemite Valley made him world-famous. In 1874 Muybridge shot and killed Major Harry Larkyns, his wife’s lover, but was acquitted in a jury trial on the grounds of justifiable homicide. He traveled for more than a year in Central America on a photographic expedition in 1875.
Today, Muybridge is known for his pioneering work on animal locomotion in 1877 and 1878, which used multiple cameras to capture motion in stop-motion photographs, and his zoopraxiscope, a device for projecting motion pictures that pre-dated the flexible perforated film strip used in cinematography. In the 1880s, he entered a very productive period at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, producing over 100,000 images of animals and humans in motion, capturing what the human eye could not distinguish as separate movements.
Muybridge spent much of his later years giving public lectures and demonstrations of his photography and early motion picture sequences, traveling back to England and Europe to publicize his work. He also edited and published compilations of his work, which greatly influenced visual artists and the developing fields of scientific and industrial photography. He returned to his native England permanently in 1894, and in 1904, the Kingston Museum, containing a collection of his equipment, was opened in his hometown.

- IMPORTANT VIRGINIA PORTRAIT(American
IMPORTANT VIRGINIA PORTRAIT(American School, 19th Century)
John Mason McCarty (1795-1852), not visibly signed, oil on canvas, 26 x 20 in.; gilt wood frame, 33-1/2 x 27-1/4 in.
Provenance: Descended in the family of the consignor who traces their roots through the sitter to founding father, George Mason IV; Private Collection, Asheville, North Carolina
Note: John Mason “Jack” McCarty was born on March 14, 1795 at Cedar Grove, a large plantation on Virginia’s Northern Neck at the confluence of the Accotink Creek into the Pohick Bay. Jack was the second youngest of eleven children, ten of whom were sons, born to Colonel Daniel Ball McCarty II and Sarah Eilbeck Mason. Descended from Irish nobility, his paternal grandmother and George Washington were cousins, and his maternal grandfather was founding father, George Mason IV. Jack received his primary education from private tutors and later attended George Town Academy. He briefly attended the College of New Jersey at Princeton before the War of 1812 where he served in the 60th Regiment of the Virginia Militia under the command of Lt. Col. Nicholas Minor. Sometime after the war, he was promoted to the rank of Captain. In late 1814, he returned to the College of William and Mary with his brothers Howard and William, completing his undergraduate studies and earning his law degree.
Jack stood at six feet with dark wavy hair and piercing bright eyes. He was known for his ready wit, excellent memory, and was said to demonstrate an inexhaustible flow of spirits. In 1818, he was elected as a delegate to the Virginia legislature but resigned his seat before taking his oath of office as a result of violating Virginia’s Anti Dueling Act. After his duel with Armistead Mason, Jack fled to New York City, where he remained for the better part of a year before returning to his hometown. He married Lucinda Lee in December 1820, and the couple ultimately settled along the banks of the Potomac on the lands he inherited from his father. There, he built a fine home for their small family and established a horse farm, with hay being the only crop grown. In Leesburg, he built a large mill on the banks of the Tuscarora creek and opened a hotel in Washington City he named the American Hotel. He was a major investor in the C&O canal and in the construction of other canals in western territories. By 1830, Jack had been promoted to colonel in the Virginia militia and was a respected attorney, politician, and businessman in the region.
Jack’s business ventures paled in comparison to the investments he made in land speculation in the western territories. He traveled extensively to the Indian territories of the northwest, making investments in both Wisconsin and Michigan, and was responsible for investments in Milwaukee, Green Bay and Detroit, and the establishment of the towns of Menasha and Neenah in Wisconsin.
Jack became a leader in the Whig party and the head of the Young Whig fraction. He served one term in the Virginia legislature from 1834-1835 and campaigned for the House of Representative in 1842, an election he lost. He remained active in politics until his death, which occurred while on a business trip to Detroit in 1852. He was initially buried in Leesburg but reinterred in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond to be laid by Lucinda’s side at her death shortly thereafter.

PIERRE SOULAGES, FRENCH (B.1919), EAU FORTE VIII, 1957, ETCHING AND AQUATINT IN COLOR ON BFK RIVES PAPER, 31 1/2"H X 22 3/4"W (FRAME)Pierre Soulages, French, (b.1919) Eau forte VIII, 1957, etching and aquatint in color on BFK Rives paper pencil signed and numbered 88/100. Please view photos at the end of the image to show pencil markings on the verso and condition of the piece out of the frame. There are two tears at top edge: 1/2" tear upper right, 3/8" tear upper center. Possible light toning. Bends, short creases, and handling marks throughout. Some rolled edges which may or may not be in the nature of the wove paper. Light brown marks or stains in the upper corners and left center near edge of paper. There is a 1" x 3/4" bump in the paper at left edge in lower quadrant. From AskArt: A painter, printmaker and sculptor, Pierre Soulages was born at Rodez, Aveyron in France. Influenced by the Celtic carvings in the local museum and by the Romanesque art and architecture of that region, he began to take an interest in art and began to paint. He went to Paris in 1938, where he saw the exhibitions of Picasso and Cézanne, and briefly studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Soulages' early paintings were often of leaf-less trees in winter, with the black branches contrasting against the background sky. After returning back to his hometown after his brief stay in Paris, he met Sonia Delaunay, with whom he discovered abstract art. In 1946, he moved back to Paris and began to make his first non-figurative works in 1947. At this time he came in contact with other artists such as Picabia and Léger, and took part in the Salon des Superindépendants. His paintings were characterized by heavy, broad black gestures on a light ground. Often, he would let the tools dictate the aesthetic effect of his paintings, using a wide rubber spatula or roller brushes instead of the traditional paintbrush. In 1949, at the Galerie Lydia Conti, Paris, Soulages had his first solo exhibition. In 1952, he made his first etchings. After 1955, he began to paint with even looser, slashing brushstrokes, sometimes with more fluid washes of color. Soulages also worked in other media, designing sets and costumes. In 1987 he designed the monumental tapestry for the French Finance Ministry. Soulages is considered the greatest French painter of his generation and has received recognition worldwide. etching and aquatint in color on BFK Rives paper Dimensions: 31 1/2"H x 22 3/4"W (frame)

From AskArt: Garo Antreasian, born February 16, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana has been involved with lithography since the age of seventeen. He was first introduced to the medium by discovering a deserted hand press at Arsenal Technical High School in his hometown of Indianapolis. He received his formal art education at the Herron in Indianapolis, receiving his BFA degree in 1948. He also studied printmaking with Will Barnet in New York at the Art Students League, and Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 in the late forties. During the 1950s, while working as an instructor at the Herron School of Art, he began to create color lithographs. In 1960, he was invited to be the first technical director of the new Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles, which moved to the University of New Mexico in 1970. During this time he worked to promote the art of lithography among American artists. Antreasian's paintings and prints incorporated innovative materials and techniques such as printing on metal foil, using metallic inks, embossing the print surface, and collaging. His work evolved from romantic, semi-abstract imagery of the 1950s and 1960s, through Abstract Expressionism, to an increasingly non-representational and Minimal mode in the 1970s. In the 1980s, he returned to painting after a long break. His works inspired by Constructivist and diagrammatic fundamentals using geometric linear configurations with colored fields and shapes. Awards include a Senior Artists Grant by the National Endowment for the Arts and an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts Degree from Purdue University. He exhibited at the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, and the 14th International Biennale of Graphic Art, Ljubljana, Yugoslavia. Biography from the Archives of askART: Known for a range of work in watercolor and gouache that included realist figures in cityscapes, landscapes, surrealism, and trompe l'oeil painting, Aaron Bohrod spent his early career in Chicago where he was born on the West Side. In 1948, he moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where he became a long-time a member of the art faculty and satisfied the inclinations of many artists who leaned towards European-influenced modernism. In this university position, he replaced John Steuart Curry, Regionalist painter from Kansas, who had died. Many artists led by Surrealist Marshall Glasier thought Curry had been provincial and limited in subject matter and style. In the late 1920's, Bohrod studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and then went to New York City to attend the Art Students League. He returned to his hometown in 1930 and resided there until the move to Wisconsin. Influenced strongly by the Social Realism of John Sloan, whom he knew from New York, Bohrod painted city people, utilizing a wide array of styles ranging from a tight, detailed manner to one that was more abstract and sketch like. One of his subjects explored in a series of paintings was the neighborhood where he grew up on the North Side of Chicago. Many of them convey the loneliness and poverty of the Depression years. He spent some time in the South Pacific during World War II as a war artist and in Europe on assignments from "Life" magazine and from the U.S. Engineers to record the events of World War II in Normandy, Cherbourg, England, Germany and the South Pacific. His completed paintings are in the Pentagon Collection. Following this assignment, he served for one year, 1942 to 1943, as Artist-in-Residence at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. In the late 1940's Bohrod began working with ceramics, which he said influenced him towards surrealism with odd juxtapositions that embraced the style of trompe l'oeil (fool-the-eye). Unlike many surrealists, his work did not have nightmarish undertones. During this period, his painting became increasingly realistic.
