CHINESE ARTIST, C1865 HONG KONG
CHINESE ARTIST, C1865
HONG KONG FROM KOWLOON
32 x 72cm
Provenance: Acquired by a local family circa 1900 and thence by descent.
The exceptional draughtsmanship of this beautifully preserved China Trade panorama from the islands in the West to East Point on the extreme left includes midway, the entire town of Victoria. Buildings of note include the numerous godowns along the waterfront, Murray Barracks, St John's Cathedral, the Government Offices, Government House (1855) and, on Victoria Peak, the signal station, built in 1861. Over forty European ships, both merchant and naval at anchor in the roadstead are shown in remarkable detail. Also included are two covered over hulks used as barrack ships or to accommodate sailors. The unusual, slightly elevated viewpoint, to the North of Hong Kong Island, depicts with military precision, the extensive Anglo-French encampment in Kowloon, territory ceded to Britain at the end of the Second Opium War in 1860.
