HAROLD COPPING HIAWATHA FRAMEDHAROLD COPPING HIAWATHA FRAMED LITHOGRAPHS 1904Featured in this lot are three (3) Harold Copping Colour Lithographs of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Poem, "Song of Hiawatha" characters, copyright 1902 C. H. Allen, published 1904. In this vibrant and enchanting colour lithograph, artist Harold Copping brings to life the timeless love story of Hiawatha and Minnehaha. Figures are delicately rendered with intricate details that showcase Copping's mastery of his craft. Each brushstroke seems to breathe life into these beloved literary figures. Each colour lithograph is individually framed in heavy cardboard frames, their front face borders illustrated with scenes from the poem. The Song of Hiawatha is an 1855 epic poem in trochaic tetrameter by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow which features Native American characters. The epic relates the fictional adventures of an Ojibwe warrior named Hiawatha and the tragedy of his love for Minnehaha, a Dakota woman. C. H. Allen was the Cedarine Allen Company, makers of piano and furniture polish in the late 19th century. These lithographs were gifted as "advertising novelties". Reverse sides of the larger pieces read, "Presented with compliments of Cedarine Allen Company Manufacturers of CEDARINE The Standard Piano and Furniture Polish. Clinton, N. Y. FRAME PAT'D FEB'Y 23, 04". The frames are shadowbox style with wood inset trim. A series of these were made by G.H. Allen copyrighted under Birch Bark in 1902. The borders are meant to replicate birch bark in appearance. Each piece features a portion of the poem which the respective lithograph portrays. Lithographs are in nice condition, frame fronts exhibit fading that blend into the illustrated scenes, edges are rounded from normal handling. Largest frames measure 9.25"W x 11.25"L, smallest is 5.25"W x 6.75"L

Theodore Holliday 11th Ohio CavalryTheodore Holliday 11th Ohio Cavalry Tintype Plus Knife & Sheath Bow-Case & Quiver Taken from Sioux Indian Theodore Holliday was 18 years old when he enlisted in the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry on June 22 1863 for what would become the greatest adventure of his life. Likely believing that he would become part of the army fighting to preserve the Union Holliday along with a detachment that became designated the ''First Independent Battalion Ohio Volunteer Cavalry'' was instead shipped west to the frontier outpost of Fort Laramie Dakota Territory (now Wyoming). For the next three years until his mustering out in 1866 Holliday built frontier outposts guarded the Pacific Telegraph Line connecting the American coasts and chased Indians not Rebels.Accompanying the lot is a laminated newspaper article published by the St. Cloud Minnesota Tribune on March 8 1928 in which Holliday relates the incident in which the material in this lot was captured. With the exception of the tintype the other materials were taken from a Sioux warrior during combat on Crow Creek Wyoming. One of the highlights of the lot is an exceptionally rare sixth plate tintype of Holliday seated atop his mount. Though the location is not identified Holliday sits astride a McClellan type saddle his M1840 sabre at his side. His saddle blanket however is distinctly not government issued but American Indian in origin. Its distinctive pattern indicates it was made by the Lakota almost certainly Oglala. The saddle blanket appears to be done in pony beadwork and is of the characteristic early Lakota style. This photograph is one of the earliest images of a mounted United States Cavalryman on the Plains. Also included in this lot is a Lakota tab pouch sinew-sewn on buffalo and beaded using colors of greasy yellow red white-heart cobalt pink and white; thin fringe decorates closing flap and military leather straps are sewn to back for belt attachment; pouch contains an undecorated hide paint pouch length (including fringe) 12 in. x width 4 in.; plus a Lakota beaded hide knife sheath with knife. The sheath is sinew-sewn with bead colors of pink clear translucent blue. Sheath is rawhide-lined with a military leather loop attached to inside for belt attachment length 9.5 in. Also included is a J. Russell & Co./ Green River Works knife length 9 in.; plus a cowhide bowcase and quiver reinforced with buffalo hide length 34.5 in; recurve bow with sinew string length 42.5 in.; and six metal-tipped arrows are housed within case average length 26 in. Condition: Insignificant bead loss to Lakota pouch has some reinforced areas sewn with thread shows use; knife sheath with bead loss; hole at bottom where knife cut through reinforced areas with thread; bowcase and quiver with repaired and reinforced areas with thread fur loss on case beautiful patina to bow two arrows missing tips.
