MARIE ATKINSON HULL
MARIE ATKINSON HULL (AMERICAN/MISSISSIPPI, 1890)Marie Atkinson Hull (American/Mississippi, 1890-1980), "High Horizon", 1959, oil on canvas, signed lower right, inscribed "Horizon" and partial exhibition label on stretcher, 36 in. x 30 in., framed. Provenance: Natchez Art Association. Ill.: Elias, Virginia McGehee, Haynie, William S., et al. The Art of Marie Hull. Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 1975, p. 68. Ill.: Elias, Virginia McGehee, Haynie, William S., et al. The Art of Marie Hull. Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 1975, p. 68. ?High Horizon? was painted in 1959 when Mrs. Hull was experimenting with abstract Expressionism. The subject matter is a building at the top of a snow-covered hill. The colors have become more intense than in her earlier works. Reds predominate, especially in the sky, to heighten the emotional impact of the painting. Texture has also gained importance as a means of expression. Both the thicker application of paint in some areas and the dripping effect of the paint are visually stimulating. The artist?s continued interest in both color relationships and the diffusion of light is apparent. She has boldly approached and handled the painting, and the result is a strong personal statement." --- Norwood, Malcolm M., Virginia McGehee Elias and William S. Haynie. The Art of Marie Hull. Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 1975, p. 68.

SET OF 2 DIETZGEN SURVEYORS
SET OF 2 DIETZGEN SURVEYORS SCOPES - ABNEY AND HORIZONIn original leather carry cases; brass, black lacquer; working.
This set of US-made, Dietzgen surveying tools would have been at home in the pocket of any serious surveyor, contractor, or forestry servicemen when they made nearly a century ago- the topographic abney/inclinometer level has working vernier and spirit level, and measures rise and slope grades by sight; and the lensatic hand level scope quickly and simply allowed a surveyor to sight the horizon by way of a clever half mirror and spirit bubble. Each appointed to its leather field case and sporting 19th century black lacquer and brass, these handsome, vintage scientific/outdoorsman instruments would be at home in any collection, or back in the field, for another 100 years of service.

Dimensions: 7"L x 3.5"W x 1.25"H, longest
