- HIPPOPOTAMUS IVORY LION CANECa.
HIPPOPOTAMUS IVORY LION CANECa. 1890-Fashioned of hippopotamus tooth in a basic L-shape with a short neck and slightly arched hand rest, the handle is carved at the front with a panel showing a powerful lion’s head with a mighty muzzle and sharp teeth and a the rear with a skull and a bone in a cavity. Evocative of a King of The Jungle snoozing in a hidden den after a good meal, the handle comes with a three stacked plain rings silver collar, a stepped malacca shaft and a metal ferrule. The cane aged well with the right portion of wear to increase its appeal without diminishing its value. Its overall flavor speaks for the workshops of Henry Howell, the leading English cane maker who supplied the specialized trade from his workshop in Birmingham. H. 4” x 1 ¾”, O.L. 34 ¾” The lion is the king of the beasts in most parts of the world and no animal has been given more attention in art and literature. Lions are recurring symbols in the coat of arms of royalty and chivalry, probably because nobility wished to be associated with its valor and strength. C.A.W. Guggisberg, in his book Simba, says the lion is referred to 130 times in the Bible. Because of the animal’s teeth size, hippopotamus ivory is only available in smaller, flat pieces and this particular one, with a form dictated by the natural shape of the tooth, is from the largest size one could encounter. Fragile through a layered structure and sensitive to moisture with an inborn tension, hippo tooth carvings often split in dry weather and acquire over the years a luminous surface coupled to a specific patina.
