[Howe joined the artist's gallery in Old Lyme CT at the invitation of fellow painter Henry Ward Ranger (American 1858-1916). While sojourning at Florence Griswold's house in the early 20th C. Howe painted one of his celebrated bovine scenes on the cabinet doors located in his hostess' parlor. Howe was so closely associated with cattle--one of his favorite subject matters--that he was sometimes affectionately referred to as ''Mr. Howe Cow''].
