GUNNS DOMESTIC MEDICINE,
GUNNS DOMESTIC MEDICINE, PUMPKINTOWN 1839Gunn's Domestic Medicine or Poor Man's Friend, Pumpkintown, Tennessee edition, published in 1839, Eighth edition (only edition published in Pumpkintown), 635 pages. 8 1/2" H x 5" W. Note: Pumpkintown, TN is no longer in existence but was originally located in McMinn County, TN near present day Athens, TN. The name was a corruption of the existing Cherokee Native American village a corruption of "Potemkin town". History (Courtesy of Ben Harris McClary via http://tennesseeencyclopedia.net/): This popular home medical guide by Dr. John C. Gunn (ca. 1795-1863) was first published in Knoxville in 1830. A proliferation of editions in Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York soon followed. Enlarged under the author's supervision in 1857 and translated into German, the book remained Gunn's original basic text on through the National Jubilee Edition, the 160th, in 1876, down to the last recorded edition, the 234th, issued in New York in 1920. Designed to serve as a guide for frontier and rural families who lived great distances from even primitive medical care, the book covered virtually any possible miscarriage of health. It contained extensive references from the works of the major medical men and journals of the time, making it also a useful textbook for largely self-taught doctors in all rural areas. The emphasis in the early editions on the use of herbs most readily available in East Tennessee indicates that initially Dr. Gunn did not expect his book to have the far-ranging influence it ultimately experienced. A sense of the volume's impact is suggested by its literary use in such diverse places and times as the Mississippi River in 1884 (Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn) and California in 1952 (John Steinbeck's East of Eden).
Condition:
Text in very good condition rebound in cloth with 1/4 leather spine(probably 1900+/-). Minor wear to hard cover and minor losses to edge of spine. First line of index page torn away/missing. Interior with expected foxing of pages.

1885 1ST ED. PERSONAL MEMOIRS OF US
1885 1ST ED. PERSONAL MEMOIRS OF US GRANT, 1ST ED.Presented is the First Edition of the "Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant", In Two Volumes, 1885, New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, Publishers. Volume I has a personal inscription from the first owner dated 1886. The memoirs of the great general and 18th U.S. President are often mentioned as one of the finest American works of nonfiction, and were written from his sick bed the last year of his life. Focusing mainly on his military career during the Mexican War and the Civil War. The book is a fascinating read with a rare fold-out of the terms of surrender given to Robert E. Lee. Volume I shows an excellent etching of Grant as a young soldier with Volume II having a portrait of the more known image of President U.S. Grant. These memoirs were written from the fall of 1884 and completed four days before his death July 23, 1885. The set was published by Grant's friend, Samuel Clemmons (Mark Twain) under the alias of Twain's nephew, Charles L. Webster. This is a wonderful excellent quality set and a must own for any Civil War enthusiast. Mark Twain established his own publishing firm in 1885, and placed his niece's husband Charles Webster in charge. The first books published by Mark Twain's firm were these Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant, and Twain's own Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Gold gilt medallions are stamped in blind to front and rear boards of both volumes. The front boards commemorate the Joint Resolution of Congress, December 17, 1863, and the rear boards the Mississippi River. Original publisher's gold gilt lettered green cloth stamped with central gold gilt medallions on both covers, gold gilt lettering spines stamped with 4-star shoulder straps gilt, floral printed endpapers. These volumes are in good overall condition, scuffing observed to cover edges, gold gilt still bright and intact. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and foxing, no other obvious marring noted.
