FRENCH BRONZE MODEL OF ATALANTA18 x
FRENCH BRONZE MODEL OF ATALANTA18 x 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 in.
Note: This particular model is based on an ancient Greek sculpture which was copied by Pierre Lepautre (1659-1744), a French sculptor who won the Prix de Rome and studied at the French Academy in Rome. He carved Atalanta for King Louis XIV to be used at Chateau de Marly.
Atalanta's story is part of Greek mythology. Atalanta's father desired a boy, she was taken to Mount Parthenion to be exposed. Artemis, a she-bear, who's cubs had been recently killed by hunters, found Atalanta and nursed her. The hunters discovered Atalanta and raised her in the mountains. Atalanta grew up to be a swift footed virgin who eschewed men and devoted herself to the huntress Artemis.
Galerie Sandrine Ladrière, Paris.
