JOHANNES HELDER INTERIOR GENRE
JOHANNES HELDER INTERIOR GENRE SCENE PAINTING Netherlands1842-1913Depicts an elder man with a pipe and a young blonde boy assembling a model boat on a flaking green painted wood bench in front of a delft tiled fire place lined with delft porcelain plates with cracks and missing corners emphasizing the age of surrounding room. A sleeping dog rests in front of the fire beneath the older man's chair, while a pile of produce has been arranged behind the young boy. Helder is well known for his genre and trompe l'oeil paintings incorporating a distinctive green wash of color. Active in Rotterdam and Leiden, Helder was allegedly apprenticed to Josef Israels (1824-1911) who was associated with the Hague School of art. Helder's works have been exhibited in Amsterdam, the Hague, and Rotterdam amongst others.
