Per Dr. Perri Kim: "The Yoruba have one of the highest rates of twinning in the world—it is estimated that out of every 1,000 births, 45-50 result in twins. Twins are revered among the Yoruba and come into this world with the protection of the orisha (deity) Shango who is evoked at the baby’s naming ceremony when he or she is a few months old. Due to the low birth weight of twins and the high infant mortality rates in Nigeria, many twin babies do not live long. If a baby dies during childbirth, in the months leading up to the naming ceremony, the parents will seek consultation with an Ifa diviner, a Babalawo. If the Babalawo ascertains a spiritual cause, he will help the parents find a carver to create an Ere ibeji figure. An Ere ibeji is a wooden carving of a male or female figure once used by the Yoruba. The figure is thought to be a focal point for the spiritual energy of the deceased twin who, according to Yoruba traditional thought, resides in the supernatural realm where he/she is cared for by a spiritual mother."

A hand-carved wooden Ibeji figure of fine form that was part of a pair of twins. The male figure stands nude with attenuated legs and genitalia exposed atop an integral circular plinth. He holds both arms to his waist, while atop his rounded shoulders is an elongated head with carved facial features: bulging eyes, a broad nose, slightly parted lips, and incised scarification grooves on his cheeks and around his eyes. The crest atop his head is a backswept coiffure. Strung on a cord and coiled around his waist are black trade beads hand-carved from blackwood. The surface of the figure is silky smooth and imbued with a deep red and brown hue. Size: 3" W x 9.75" H (7.6 cm x 24.8 cm); 10.5" H (26.7 cm) on included custom stand.
The Yoruba have one of the highest numbers of twin births in the world, 4 times higher than in Europe, for example. Ibeji are known to the Yoruba as 2 people who share 1 soul. If one of the human twins dies, whether as a child or an adult, the surviving human twin is considered to have little hope of living with only half a soul. When a twin dies, a figure dedicated to Ibeji, the deity of twins, is carved to be the earthly abode of the spirit of that twin. Wooden figures like these are created to keep the souls of the twins together.
