RARE EGYPTIAN STRIDING IBIS
RARE EGYPTIAN STRIDING IBIS BRONZE / COBALT BLUE GLASSEgypt, Ptolemaic Period, ca. 332 to 30 BCE. An extremely rare example of a majestic ibis exhibiting a body shaped from solid glass in an opaque, cobalt-blue hue. The ibis presents atop a pair of attached bronze legs in a striding pose as if meandering through shallow waters, its lengthy claws digging into the alluvial earth as it searches intently for its next meal. The plump, egg-shaped body has its tail raised gently into the air opposite its slightly bowed shoulders, and both wings are held gracefully against its sides to indicate the lack of any surrounding predators. The attached bronze head bears a slender, sinuous neck that rises up to the head with its signature curving beak as well as 2 ovoid eyes that were perhaps adorned with paste glass inlays at one time. Thick layers of green, brown, and russet patina across the bronze anatomy create a wondrous chromatic effect that complements the deep azure and cream colors of the body. Size: 4.66" L x 1.53" W x 4" H (11.8 cm x 3.9 cm x 10.2 cm); 5.23" H (13.3 cm) on included custom stand.
The ibis, an elegant, long-legged wading bird that lives along the shores of the Nile, was associated with the ibis-headed Thoth - god of mathematics, writing, intellectual pursuits, and wisdom - as well as with the sage and god of architecture Imhotep in later periods. The ancient Egyptians believed that worshipping Thoth necessitated the ritual sacrifice and mummification of millions of ibises to be displayed in underground galleries, many of which have been excavated at Saqqara, near Memphis, Egypt's ancient capital. Saqqara was a temple complex with a large system of underlying catacombs. This piece was likely a votive zoomorph created to be placed inside a tomb, and the blue glass body is perhaps representative of the life-giving and life-restoring waters of the sacred Nile River.
To corroborate some of these points, author Manfred Lurker writes, "The sacred ibis (ibis religiosa) was a white bird with black on its head, neck and the tips of the wing pinions. It attained special significance because it was regarded as the incarnation of Thoth. Numerous mummified ibises were laid to rest in the necropolis of Hermopolis, Thoth's main cult centre. Thousands of examples have also been found in the sacred animal necropolis at Sakkara. They were specially bred on the nearby lake at Abusir to be embalmed and offered to pilgrims to dedicate in the vast underground galleries of the site. The crested ibis (ibis comata), with dark iridescent plumage, is seen in the written character for the word 'to be radiant' and in earlier times it appeared as a metaphor for 'transfiguration', and, lastly, as an image for the transfigured dead." (Lurker, Manfred. "The Gods and Symbols of Ancient Egypt: An Illustrated Dictionary." Thames & Hudson, London, 1986, pp. 68-69)

EGYPTIAN MUMMIFIED IBIS + X-RAY
EGYPTIAN MUMMIFIED IBIS + X-RAY PHOTO - 1910 PROVENANCE...Ancient Egypt, found at Abydos, Late Dynastic to Roman Period, ca. 400 BCE to 200 CE. An incredibly well-preserved mummified ibis exhibiting expert layering to the linen wrappings. The bird's body is folded into a crouch, its head down and beak placed along the sternum, with intricately arranged patterns that aid in both preserving and accentuating the sacred avian form. The bundle is accompanied by a framed X-ray showing the crouched and preserved body of the bird within it. The mummy may have once had a bronze head attached to its front, which was common practice for these ibis mummies. This example that clearly contains the actual body of the bird is rarer than you may assume - recent research suggests that up to a third of Egyptian animal mummy bundles only contain partial animals or are even just bundled cloth, made by ancient embalmers to sell to gullible pilgrims. Included is a framed Xray of the mummy that clearly shows the mummified ibis inside as well as its previous bundle of modern, beige-hued wrappings. Size: 14.375" L x 5.75" W (36.5 cm x 14.6 cm)
The ibis, an elegant, long-legged wading bird that lives along the shores of the Nile, was associated with the god Thoth and, later, the sage Imhotep. He was the god of wisdom and writing, and in worship to him ibises were ritually sacrificed, embalmed, and mummified before being buried in underground galleries. CT-scans on some of these mummies has revealed that many were fed posthumously. Their stomachs were removed during the mummification process, and, via an incision, a small parcel of food - mainly snails - was inserted into them before they were carefully replaced in the bird's chest cavity. As shocking as it may seem, there were millions of these burials, many of which have been excavated at Saqqara, near Memphis, Egypt's ancient capital. Others, like this one, were found at Abydos, one of Egypt's oldest cities, where many pharaohs were entombed. Especially during the Late Period, the Egyptians seem to have been obsessed with ibis (and other animal) mummies, which, in the case of ibises, were used to gain Thoth's favor. A pious individual would go to the temple, pay a priest to intercede with Thoth for them, and the priest would mummify an ibis.

IMPRESSIVE EGYPTIAN GESSO'D WOOD
IMPRESSIVE EGYPTIAN GESSO'D WOOD HEAD OF AN IBIS**Originally Listed At $1200**
Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. A dramatic, playful head of an ibis, carved with a dramatically long beak, a large eye, incised curves behind the eye giving the impression of a swirl of feathers, and a long, straight tab for insertion into a body. Ibis figures - consisting of separately carved heads and legs attached to hollow wooden bodies were used by the Egyptians to hold the mummified remains of ibises who were linked to Toth, the god of wisdom and writing. This example is decorated with gesso, and the remains of original pigmentation - pale green and gilt - are still visible in many places on the surface. Size: 15.4" W x 1.5" H (39.1 cm x 3.8 cm); 4.45" H (11.3 cm) on included custom stand.
The ibis, an elegant, long-legged wading bird that lives along the shores of the Nile, was associated with the god Thoth. He was the god of wisdom and writing, and in worship to him many thousands of ibises were ritually sacrificed, embalmed, and mummified before being buried in underground galleries. Thousands of these burials have been excavated at Saqqara, near Memphis, Egypt's ancient capital.

DON BALKE (B. 1933) "WHITE-FACED
DON BALKE (B. 1933) "WHITE-FACED IBIS"Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "White-faced Ibis" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for Balke's Shorebirds of the 50 States, cancelled December 28, 1986. Found along freshwater shores and swamps, the White-faced Ibis is very similar in nature to its Eastern cousin, the Glossy Ibis. Except during breeding when the White-faced Ibis acquires the facial plumes which give it its name, the two Ibises are visually indistinguishable. Like the Glossy Ibis, the White-faced feeds and nests in large colonies with herons, egrets and other Ibises. The White-faced Ibis prefers to feed in the muddy shallow bottomlands near its home. It uses its long sickle-shaped bill to seize its prey; its primary diet consists of small amphibians and freshwater crustaceans -- although it will sometimes feed on fish and earthworms. After satisfying its hunger, the White-faced Ibis returns to the noisy, crowded rookery and joins the rest of its flock. The Ibis' nests are built from dead reeds and twigs found along the shoreline, and are usually built on patches of floating vegetation. During breeding, the iridescent sheen of its body plumes contrasts with its dull white face. Both parents take an interest in incubating the four, pale blue-green eggs. They relieve one another with affectionate bill tapping and guttural cooing. In about three weeks the young appear covered with dull, blackish down, and by late summer they can fly and often wander from the breeding site. The use of pesticides is severely affecting the breeding of White-faced Ibises, and their numbers are steadily declining.
