RARE 19TH C. CHINESE PORCELAIN COVERED DISH WITH KNOP OF MOTHER NURSING HER TODDLER Leaf shaped dish, with flowering branch decoration on sides, the domed leaf top supporting the reclining mother, who is clothed in robes but has bared her breasts for her little boy, who has kicked up one foot for her to hold. Unmarked. 4 3/4" x 6" x 2 1/2". An old, typed card inside reads "Very rare piece of Rose Medallion work. The rose medallion china of China is old. They began making it 2000 years ago and it was made for years till during the Sino-Japanese War the kilns were destroyed. Boys are so precious to the Chinese heart that they are the joy of the mother and her symbol of security. Often a mother nurses her cherished son till he is three or four years old. Willed to Polly".
