RICHARD HAYLEY LEVER (AMERICAN, 1876-1958) "MENEMSHA, MARTHA'S VINEYARD" Watercolor on paper. Signed 'Hayley Lever' (lower right) and dated '1931'.
Richard Hayley Lever (American, 1876-1958)
Born in Adelaide, Australia in 1876, Hayley Lever was known for his town-shore landscapes and still-life painting in a style that combined impressionism with vivid colors and strong lines of realism - post impressionism. In his use of color, he was deeply influenced by Vincent Van Gogh. He freely explored numerous styles based on impressionism but was never locked into any particular style.
He showed early art talent and traveled to England in 1893. He studied art in London and then painted at an artists' colony in Cornwall on the seacoast of St. Ives where he began his seacoast paintings. He received much attention in Europe for these works. In 1908, he did a series of paintings called "Van Gogh's Hospital, Holland" expressing the profound influence he felt of that artist.
Lever came to America in 1911, encouraged by American artist Ernest Lawson whom he knew in France, and was soon counted among the most widely exhibited artists in New York City.

ARTHUR TURNBULL HILL (AMERICAN,
ARTHUR TURNBULL HILL (AMERICAN, 1868-1929) "SUNSET EAST HAMPTON" Oil on canvas. Signed 'Arthur Turnbull Hill' (lower center left). Signed and titled on stretcher.
Catalogue Note: American painters in the final decades of the 19th century moved steadily into the transition heralded by George Inness from the heroic, nationalistic landscape into a phase more personally visionary. Their painting focused less on the exact replication of nature than on scenery, as a spiritual manifestation and it tended toward impressions and depictions of personal experience. Landscape painting tends to reflect changes of social and industrial growth, and was in one way escapist but the combination laid the foundation for a new realism.
By the end of the 19th century landscape painting had come full circle and was burgeoning with new perspectives. The great 19th century artist, George Inness, was profoundly responsible for influencing the painters who where to follow him upon his contact with the Barbizon school. Originally, the work of Cole and Durand and Old Masters prints were his true models and taking hikes in the wild where he chose pastoral scenes close to home. A change took hold after a trip that Inness took to Europe, particularly France, where he came under the influence of the Barbizon School. Theodore Rousseau, Charles Daubigny and Camille Corot became his new idols and he decided to abandon the meticulous naturalism of the Hudson River School in favor of his own subjective expression of nature. He no longer portrayed what he saw literally, but tried to project his own vision into his paintings. Inness was seeking to capture the mood of the landscape through a lyrical and painterly style, his own personal Impressionism, for which he became famous. Inness also filled his canvases with the poetic atmosphere in the manner of Turner, whose work had impressed him and he combined this luminist approach with a pastoral quality derived from the Barbizon painters of France.

TARPON CARVINGStephen R. Smith
TARPON CARVINGStephen R. Smith (b. 1942)
Jamestown, NY
base is 88 in. long, 38 in. wide
This grand tarpon carving measures seventy-five inches from tip to tail. It is mounted on a beveled-edge wooden base which displays the maker’s plaque on the bottom left.
After master carver Steve Smith completed this striking carving, the artist said it was the first one of the species he’d done, and likely the last. In 2019 the American Museum of Fly Fishing held an exhibition of the carver’s works titled “Commemorating the Catch: Fish Carvings by Stephen R. Smith.”
“Close examination of Smith carvings helps explain what sets his work apart. He is recreating specific great fish, rich in distinctive individual detail…There are elements of both realism and impressionism in his work…the colors of these carvings are remarkably lifelike, but trompe l’oeil shadings suggest dimensionality and even interior structures glimpsed through translucent flesh. This blending of techniques is masterful yet so subtle that it creates a unique visual experience,” writes Jim Brown.
David Nichols writes, “One can see the influence of his predecessors—particularly John Russell, John Tully, and Dhuie Russell Tully—in Steve’s work, which itself ranks alongside the best carvings of the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries.”
“There is reverence for nature at the heart of all Smith’s work,” according to Brown, and this grand approximately one- hundred and sixty pound trophy model represents the finest tarpon carving we’ve ever come across.

M. VERN BREITMAYER (AMERICAN, 1889-1966) CALIFORNIA LAN...M. Vern Breitmayer (American, 1889-1966) California Landscape oil on canvas Signed and monogrammed verso 19 1/2 in. h. x 35 1/2. in. w., canvas 21 in. h. x 36 1/4 in. w., as framed Vern Breitmayer of Jackson, Michigan (1889 - 1966) Born April 24, 1889, Vern Breitmayer was one of five sons of William and Mary (Siegrist) Breitmayer. Always drawing, he found his initial attempts directed toward illustrations for the "Reflector," his Jackson High School yearbook. In the summer of 1907 he went to Detroit to study with John Wicker at the Detroit Art Academy. Wicker, trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, had been appointed an instructor there in 1903 after having spent seven years abroad. In the fall of 1907 Breitmayer enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. There his teachers included Charles Grafly, a noted sculptor; William Merritt Chase, considered one of the best instructors of American Impressionism; and Hugh Breckenridge, who undoubtedly had the greatest influence in the use of color in his artwork. In 1910 Breitmayer was awarded the Thouron Prize for Composition as well as a Fellowship at the Academy. Breitmayer also traveled to Paris, enrolling for a time in the classes of Canadian Percival Tudor-Hart, a noted color theorist who taught a musical system of color harmony. Returning home to Jackson, Michigan, the artist found employment at this father's furniture store while also pursuing a career as an artist. He began exhibiting his work locally, having a one-man show with the Jackson Art Association at the Public Library in 1915. He also exhibited in Chicago, Philadelphia, and at the Detroit Institute of Art. The artist spent many enjoyable summers in Charlevoix, Michigan, where he developed his talent for watercolors. In the 1940's he found employment with the Ford Motor Company as a Design Engineer. Upon retirement he moved to Santa Cruz, California, where he became a popular member of the Santa Cruz Art League. Breitmayer died of a heart attack on January 29, 1966.

In Ohio, notable exhibitions include a Distinguished Alumnus one-person show at the Cleveland Institute of Art (1982); a one-person show at the Canton Museum of Art (1995); exhibition in 24 May Shows at the Cleveland Museum of Art between 1938 and 1977. HENRY MACGINNIS (AMERICAN,
HENRY MACGINNIS (AMERICAN, 1875-1962) BULL RUN DAM, C. ...Henry MacGinnis (American, 1875-1962) Bull Run Dam, c. 1916 oil on canvas In very fine condition with rare Newcomb-Macklin frame Signed H. R. MacGinnis lower left 40 in. h. x 30 in. w., image 51 in. h. x 41 in. w., as framed Henry Ryan MacGinnis, 1875-1962, was born in Indiana and began his art studies under the eminent Hoosier artists T.C. Steele, J.O. Adams and William Forsyth. One of his earliest exhibitions was in 1896, when he showed his work with other notable Hoosier artists such as T.C. Steele, J. Ottis Adams, R.B. Gruelle, William Forsyth, Otto Stark and Clarence Ball. In 1900, MacGinnis left Indiana to study in Europe. For five years, he painted and studied in Paris and Munich, where he won Honorable Mention from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He was a member of the Audubon Artists, Hoosier Salon, Salmagundi Club, and Allied Artists. In 1908, soon after MacGinnis returned to the states, William Merritt Chase, chairman of the Exhibition Committee of the 19th Annual Exhibition of the Art Club in Philadelphia, selected the MacGinnis painting New Hampshire Hills for an important exhibit. The show included paintings from other artists such as Mary Cassatt, Ernest Lawson, Childe Hassam and William Merritt Chase. A broad look at MacGinnis' work suggests a concern with impressionism; however, for the most part, MacGinnis stayed within the realm of realism often softened by an impressionistic approach. As mentioned, MacGinnis began painting with the Hoosier artists in Indiana, primarily focusing on landscapes from that region. In 1924, MacGinnis moved to Trenton, New Jersey where he both taught and continued to paint. He focused on painting portraits and landscapes near the Delaware River and New Hope, Pennsylvania region. During this period, he also painted many landscapes and seascapes in Provincetown, Massachusetts, Cape Breton, New Jersey, and in Vermont and New Hampshire. - Richard Frey
